Proposed legislation in the Illinois Senate would let adult victims who suffered sexual abuse as children file lawsuits even if the statute of limitations expired. Cardinal Francis George said in a letter that this legislation is motivated by money.
Cardinal George's statement is an outrageous insult to victims and an unscrupulous assault on justice.
Victims file lawsuits and endure recounting their traumatic experience with the hope of holding the perpetrators accountable and to make sure it doesn't happen again. Often the sense of justice gained from lawsuits helps victims heal. A time limit to bring abuse cases hurts those victims whose psychological trauma held them back from coming forward about their abuse right away.
Cardinal George also made the absurd claim that this legislation is not about protecting children. Doesn't it make sense that lawsuits exposing abusive priests would prevent these priests from harming any more children?
Victims and their supporters are up in arms about the Cardinal's statements. This might be one time where taking a cheap shot about lawsuits and money doesn't fool anyone.
